Managing the fear of hunger after GLP-1

Reducing your GLP-1 dose, whether that's Ozempic, Mounjaro or Wegovy, can feel frightening. You start scanning for signs. Is the hunger back? Is this the beginning of it returning? That fear creates urgency, and urgency is what leads to overeating. But hunger itself isn't the real issue. Fear of hunger is.

Why does coming down in dose bring the fear back?

While you were on a higher dose, the medication was doing the work of suppressing your appetite for you. As the dose reduces, or stops altogether, normal hunger signals return, and for many people that return feels alarming rather than ordinary. The mind interprets the sensation as evidence that the weight loss is unravelling, even when nothing has actually gone wrong.

Is hunger really the problem?

Hunger is simply information. It tells you that your body needs fuel, nothing more. What turns that information into a crisis is the meaning your unconscious mind attaches to it. If hunger has become linked, at an unconscious level, with failure or with the weight coming back, then every normal pang gets treated as an emergency, and that sense of emergency is what drives urgent, reactive eating.

Is this about more than the number on the scale?

For many people, losing weight on GLP-1 medication has meant becoming someone new. A slimmer version of themselves, often for the first time in years or even ever. That new identity can feel wonderful, but it can also feel fragile.

If part of you is still waiting for the old identity to reassert itself, then any sign of hunger doesn't just feel physical, it feels like proof that the old you is coming back. That's often where the real fear sits, underneath the fear of hunger itself.

Hypnotherapy allows your unconscious mind to settle into this new identity as something solid and genuinely yours, rather than something borrowed from the medication and at risk of being taken away.

How does hypnotherapy help you maintain weight loss after GLP-1?

Hypnotherapy works directly with your unconscious mind to change the meaning attached to hunger, so that it's understood as information rather than an emergency. Once that shift happens, hunger stops triggering panic and the urgency that leads to overeating naturally falls away. This is what allows you to maintain your results long after the jabs are gone, because the change has happened in your mind, not just in your medication dose.
